As a wise man once said, the human eye and brain are programmed to see and absorb things at walking pace. Sometimes, walking pace is not possible so a happy medium is on a bicycle. It is truly the best way to travel and has become far more popular in recent years.
With the London Olympics just around the corner British cycling is looking very healthy and there is no better time to get involved, nearly every town has its own cycle club and there are literally hundred of cycle sportives held each year throughout the UK.
Supported or self-supported?
It is possible to carry all the equipment you need for an extended journey, even including camping gear, stove and food for a few days. This is pretty tough going however and planning a route using hostels and B&B’s can allow you to carry very little and is a more gentle introduction into cycle touring. Alternatively you may wish to undertake a supported trip such as those run by More Adventure. For the adventurous, a Lands End to John O’Groats Cycle covers the full length of the UK whilst the Coast to Coast to Coast Cycle is a more gentle and relaxing four days across the width of England. If you need advice on journeys or anything bicycle-related, get in touch – they love anything bike!
What route do I take?
There are endless possibilities for planning a cycling route in the UK. There are some epic journeys – Lands End to John O’Groats is the test piece for any long distance cyclist and has become a bit of an institution with some riders completing the journey on an annual basis! The Sustrans Network is an extremely valuable resource detailing the numerous cycle networks throughout the UK. Some of these routes are traffic-free but the majority are quiet country lanes, allowing you to enjoy the countryside at your own pace!
