La Rambla is a magnet for pickpockets, Anna says (Image: Getty). Don’t bring heels. Barcelona may be known for its stunning architecture, lively nightlife and beautiful streets, but Anna says high heels are one item tourists should leave at home. Instead, she recommends packing comfortable footwear as visitors are likely to spend hours exploring on foot. With cobbled streets, long walks between attractions and plenty of sightseeing opportunities, practical shoes are far more useful than fashionable heels. Choosing supportive, flat shoes ensures travelers can handle the city’s labyrinthine streets without unnecessary strain, while also preserving the integrity of the cobbled paths that are central to Barcelona’s character.

Don’t eat or drink on La Rambla. La Rambla is Barcelona’s most famous street and a must-see for many visitors, but Anna warns tourists against stopping there for food and drinks. She also notes that the busy tourist hotspot is particularly attractive to pickpockets, making it worth staying alert while passing through. The street’s chaotic energy, with vendors and performers competing for attention, creates an environment where distractions are common, and valuables can be lost in moments.

Never put your phone in your pocket. By distributing weight across the body, cross-body bags reduce the likelihood of pickpockets targeting you. This is especially important in crowded areas like La Rambla, where thieves can easily snatch items from your pockets. Using a cross-body bag allows you to keep your belongings secure while keeping your hands free for handling through crowds and holding onto your belongings.
