Air New Zealand has revealed more details about its Skynest sleep pods, which will offer economy passengers the chance to lie flat during long-haul flights. The Skynest is a six-pod configured sleep zone that will provide four-hour nap sessions.
Each pod will include a full-size pillow, sheets, and blanket, as well as ear plugs, a separate reading light, and a personal device USB outlet. The pods will be located between Premium Economy and Economy, and each will come with a separate seatbelt to ensure passengers can fasten them and stay in the pod during turbulence.
According to Air New Zealand Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty, each passenger will be limited to one session, with families traveling on the same ticket able to book a session for each passenger, pending availability. The bedding will be changed between sessions, and a 30-minute transition time will be allowed.

The lights will gently come on at the end of each session, and the crew will politely wake any passengers who sleep through this. The price for the 4-hour period is expected to be around NZ$400 to NZ$600, although the exact details of the booking process are still being worked out.
Skynest will launch on Air New Zealand’s ultra-long-haul flights, starting with the popular Auckland – New York and Auckland – Chicago routes. The service will be available from September 2024, and it’s expected to be a major innovation in the economy travel experience.
